How to Choose the Right Smart Lock for Your Door in South Africa

A smart lock can add fingerprint, PIN, card, app and key access, but the feature list is only half of the buying decision. The lock must also physically suit the door, frame and environment where it will be installed.

Before ordering a smart lock, use the checks below to narrow down the right type and avoid an expensive compatibility problem.

1. Identify the door material and construction

Start by confirming whether the door is timber, aluminium, steel, a narrow-profile door, or part of a sliding-door system. A standard smart handle lock that fits a timber door may be too wide for an aluminium stile, while a slim lock may be better suited to narrow-profile applications.

If the door has a security gate or another door immediately in front of it, also check that there is enough clearance for the smart lock handle, keypad and fingerprint reader.

2. Measure the available width

The width of the door stile and the position of the existing lock body are important. Measure the usable flat area where the front and rear lock bodies will sit. On aluminium doors, a few millimetres can determine whether a particular lock is suitable.

Do not rely only on the overall door width. Photos and measurements of the lock area are more useful when checking compatibility.

3. Check the existing mortise and backset

Many smart locks use a mortise inside the door. The mortise size, spindle position and backset need to work with the door and frame. Replacing an existing lock can sometimes require new cut-outs or modifications, so the old lock should be assessed rather than assuming the new one will be a direct swap.

4. Consider weather exposure

If the lock is on an exterior door that receives rain or direct weather, choose a model specifically suited to that exposure. A lock used comfortably on an internal apartment door is not automatically the right choice for an uncovered entrance gate or exterior door.

5. Choose the access methods you actually need

Common smart-lock access methods include fingerprint, PIN code, RFID card, mobile app, mechanical key and, on selected models, face recognition or an integrated camera.

For a family home, fingerprint and PIN access may be the most frequently used. For an Airbnb, guest house or rental property, temporary or remotely managed codes can be more important. For offices or staff access, card or access-management features may matter more.

6. Decide whether remote access is essential

Not every smart lock offers the same remote features. Some use Bluetooth for nearby control, while Wi-Fi-enabled or gateway-connected models can offer additional remote functions depending on the product and platform.

If remote unlocking, guest-code management or event records are important, confirm those features on the specific lock before buying rather than assuming all smart locks behave the same way.

7. Think about power and emergency access

Most battery-powered smart locks warn when batteries are low. It is still important to understand the backup access method. Depending on the model, this might include a mechanical key or an emergency external power connection.

Keep the emergency key in a secure location outside the locked property rather than inside the home.

8. When a site assessment makes sense

A site assessment is especially useful for aluminium doors, sliding doors, narrow stiles, unusual mortises, security-door combinations or installations where cutting and modification may be required. It is also useful when you want to compare two or more lock options before committing.
