Which Smart Lock Fits My Door?

Choosing a smart lock starts with the door, not just the features. The correct lock depends on your door material, thickness, existing lock body, available mounting space, opening direction and whether the entrance is exposed to rain.

1. What type of door do you have?

Wooden or standard hinged doors

These usually offer the most flexibility because there is often enough material for a standard smart-lock body and mortise. Door thickness and the existing cut-out still need to be checked.

Aluminium or narrow-frame doors

These normally need a slimmer lock body. The width of the aluminium stile is critical, so a standard wide smart lock may not fit safely.

Sliding doors

Sliding doors use different lock mechanisms from hinged doors. Choose a model specifically suited to the sliding-door frame and hook/locking arrangement.

Outdoor or exposed entrances

Do not assume every smart lock is waterproof. If rain can reach the handle, choose a model rated for the exposure level or protect the lock under suitable cover.

2. Check these measurements before buying

• Door thickness: measure the full thickness of the door.
• Available handle width: measure the flat mounting area around the existing handle.
• Existing lock body / mortise: photograph the edge of the door with the lock plate visible.
• Door frame clearance: check that the new handle and strike arrangement will clear the frame.
• Opening direction: note whether the door opens left or right and inward or outward.
