A smart lock should be chosen for the door first and the features second. The best fingerprint or Wi-Fi lock is still the wrong product if its body, mortise, backset or weather rating does not suit the door.

What can a smart lock do?

Depending on the model, a smart lock can provide fingerprint access, PIN codes, RFID cards, app control, temporary access codes, mechanical-key backup, a built-in doorbell or camera, and in some cases face recognition. Not every model includes every feature, so start with the way the property will actually be used.

Check the door before choosing the lock

Wooden doors, aluminium doors, narrow-stile doors, sliding doors, security doors and exterior gates can require different lock bodies. Important measurements include door thickness, existing cut-outs, backset, handle position and the available space around the frame.

For exterior doors, choose a lock designed for the expected exposure. A lock installed under a deep covered entrance has different weather requirements from one exposed directly to rain.

Fingerprint, PIN, card or app?

Fingerprint: fast for everyday household access. PIN: useful for family, staff and temporary visitors. Cards: practical for selected users or managed properties. App access: useful for management, access records and compatible remote functions.

For Airbnb and short-term rental properties, temporary codes can reduce the need to hand over physical keys. For family homes, fingerprint plus PIN and mechanical backup is often a practical combination.

Wi-Fi and remote access

Some locks connect directly to Wi-Fi while others use Bluetooth locally and require a compatible gateway for remote features. Confirm how the exact model connects before assuming that every function works remotely.

If remote access is important, reliable Wi-Fi at the door and backup power for the network can also matter.

Installation matters

Smart-lock installation can involve drilling, enlarging an existing mortise, aligning the latch and strike, routing cables through the door and configuring the app. Poor alignment can cause a lock to work electronically but still struggle mechanically.
